ADA Compliant Table Bases

ADA Compliant Table Bases

If you are a restaurant or small business owner then you want to make sure that any potential customer will have access to your business and be comfortable using your facilities. People in wheel chairs can have a difficult time using standard tables which means it is important for businesses to have options for them. The ADA's goal is to ensure that all businesses implement these measures.

Legs & Bases is proud to announce we offer ADA compliant table bases. What does this mean?

What is the ADA?

“The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits the exclusion of people with disabilities from everyday activities, such as buying an item at the store, watching a movie in a theater, enjoying a meal at a local restaurant, exercising at the local health club or having the car serviced at a local garage.” U.S. Small Business Administration. What this means for you is that your restaurant or small business must have table bases which follow the regulations of the ADA. Specifically, at least one table if you have fewer than 20 tables must be wheel chair accessible (If you have more than 20 5% of tables must be wheel chair accessible). Bar areas are counted separately, and the same rules apply to them. For bars it is important to note that the surface area must be no higher than 34" (typical bar height is around 41 to 42 inches).

ADA Compliant Tables

An ADA compliant table has a surface height of no less than 28” and no more than 34” above the floor. At least 27” of knee clearance (note that 29” is even better for people using electric wheel chairs) must be provided between the underside of the table and the floor. Each accessible eating location much have an accessible route (36” wide with people seated at tables) and a clear floor area 30” by 48”. The floor area must also extend 19” under the table in order to provide knee & leg clearance.
